Welcome to the second half of 2017, which will go by in what feels like three weeks but will also feel like 19 years thanks to Political Shenanigans. Time is weird! Luckily, we have books to get us through it all.

I always enjoy looking at all the books I may read, even the ones that I'm going to have to make hard purchasing decisions about. Out of my anticipated books last time, I've read 10. For a lot of them I'm waiting for them to cycle out of the new collection and into general at the library so I can enjoy all the things I check out for a full, glorious month. I suspect I won't get to some of these until 2018 when my library buys all the late-year release books and cycles the others out of new. I love my library, but I wish the new book check out time was longer than two weeks. Two and a HALF weeks would help me. Alas, alas.

I have my eye on a ton of science fiction IN SPACE this time around. Some of these I suspect I'll buy if my finances work out so I can use them for my space opera challenge. Read more... )

What great-sounding books have I missed? What's everyone else looking forward to?

“Time travel is real, and all of history is vulnerable to attack. Which is why we must travel through time to stop the spread of these so-called "time aberrations" and to erase their damage to history. After going back in time to reverse a future created by a mad man, we interacted with our past selves which resulted in a time storm. Now we have to ride it out until it passes so we can set things right.

We are a team of outcasts and misfits, so please don't call us heroes. We're Legends.”

- Legends of Tomorrow

Los Angeles 2017.

After their adventures in World War I era France the Legends were caught in a time storm. Their ship, the Waverider suffered heavy damage and was forced to ground in 2017 Los Angeles. They quickly discovered that something had gone very wrong.

Dinosaurs from the Cretaceous, the Roman Colosseum and the Great Wall of China all existing in the same place. Cavemen now living down the street from people who should have been from the 31st century. Horse and buggies driving next to Mercedes and everyone acting like there was nothing wrong.

Time was broken. Time is broken; there's nothing that can be done about it. With another time jump being impossible the Legends were forced to spread out to scout the area. One by one each of them was swept up into the time stream, leaving only Gideon.

While relocating the Waverider to safety, Gideon began to pick up signs of aberrations ...

I just finished reading the start of another series (The Order of the Sanguines) called The Blood Gospel.

A soldier, a priest, and an archeologist walk into a bar... not really. They are all in Israel in an attempt to uncover the Blood Gospel, a book reportedly written by Christ in his own blood. And hey! The Bathory story is also woven into this story. There are vampires, called the Strigoi, and those called Sanguinists. The latter are priests that follow the church and drink a wine infused with Christs blood by special consecration or blessing, as opposed to human blood. This is all brought about by an old prophecy and the book ends before a new mission so I am assuming book 2 will pick right up.

Another book I am reading, published in 1887, is called Ten Days in a Mad-House written by a woman named Nellie Bly, a reporter, who fakes her way into an insane asylum in order to report her findings on the treatment of patients, etc... I instantly think Lana Winters from season 2 of American Horror Story. What's sad is the treatment reported within this book is happening all around us.
